Bank Job film screening

Transactionland is all about finding ways into subjects that often feel inaccessible for people. There are lots of reasons things might be inaccessible - it can be because they are complicated, because they use opaque language, or sometimes it’s just because it’s boring.

I have been trying to understand how debt works for the longest time, and get stumped because of all three of these things in tandem. Luckily artists and filmmakers Hilary Powell and Daniel Edelstyn have done a good job of demystifying a lot of this through their project Bank Job, where they printed their own money, sold it for the equivalent amount in GBP, and split the profits - 50% to writing off pay day debts in their area, and 50% to local community projects.

So, with their permission, we held a DIY screening of the feature length documentary they made about this project. Around 20 people came to sit in the shop and watch the film on a Thursday evening. I would really recommend this film to anyone who finds it easier to understand things in practice than in theory! It’s also fun and subversive and involves an explosion at the end.
